CULVER CITY , Calif. , August 11, 2004——Discus Dental Software today announced that they have successfully completed the first phase of migrating DentalVision dental practice management solution, built with Sybase PowerBuilder, to the Web and J2EE, with the revolutionary Appeon for PowerBuilder product. This project comes in response both to Discus Dental Software's unwavering commitment to the group practice/enterprise market and to market-driven demand for its DentalVision Enterprise product.
"Appeon is the silver-bullet for migrating PowerBuilder client/server applications onto the Web and J2EE," said Bruce Lieberthal, DDS, General Manager and lead architect of Discus Dental Software, "We are excited about being able to deliver a product to market 80% sooner and at a fraction of the cost we would incur to develop it internally."
The project is being executed under a set of extremely stringent condition. First, there will be minimal User Interface (UI) changes, as it would be very expensive to retrain dental office staff to learn a new UI or find another way of staffing it. Additionally, the resulting Web application needs to meet high performance and scalability standards. While these requirements had ruled out any .NET or J2EE rewrite solutions, they strongly support Appeon for PowerBuilder as the ideal solution.
"
Discus Dental is among many leading corporations in the world who are benefiting from Appeon for PowerBuilder, a product built with 350 engineering-years of investments," said Raj Nathan, Executive Vice President of Sybase Inc. "Together with Appeon Corporation, we have over 200 product engineers and consultants fully committed to helping Discus Dental Software to become the first vendor in the world to offer a Web-based dental practice management solution with powerful client/server user interface and productivity."
Based on the revolutionary J2EE-based Web development and deployment platform, Appeon for PowerBuilder, in the first phase of the project, Appeon consultants converted nearly 30% of the application in just 4 weeks. The resulting Appeon Web application precisely replicated the rich application UI and functionalities in an n-tier Web application that was deployed to the Sybase EAServer J2EE application server.
Appeon consultants are now working closely with Discus Dental Software architects and system analysts to complete the migration project. Discus Dental and Appeon anticipate the DentalVision practice management software for the Web will be released in early 2005, following its rigorous beta tests in Appeon R&D facilities and selected dental offices around the country.
